Ksamil Beaches: the Maldives of Albania, For Real

White sand, four islets you can kayak to, and the coves locals actually go to when Ksamil fills up — a beach-by-beach guide.

Ksamil sits inside Butrint National Park, about 15 km south of Saranda, and The Guardian was recommending it as far back as 2013 — long before the TikTok boom. The signature view is the four rocky islets just off the beach: three of them are close enough to reach by kayak (rentals around €10 an hour) or even a strong swim. The village beaches — Ksamil Beach, Lori, Paradise, Bora Bora and company — are white sand and shallow turquoise, and in August they fill completely: a sunbed-and-umbrella set for two runs roughly €10–30, premium cabanas more.

The coves beyond the crowds

When Ksamil overflows, the coast keeps giving. Mirror Beach (Pasqyra) is a pebble cove with glass-flat morning water, reachable on the Saranda–Butrint bus plus a 15-minute walk down. Pulëbardha, between Saranda and Ksamil, is a cliff-framed cove made for snorkelling. And Krorëza is the wild one — a virgin beach you can only reach by sea, which is exactly what the boat tours from the Saranda port are for (day trips typically €15–25).

How to choose between the Ksamil beaches

The Ksamil beaches are not one beach but a cluster, and picking the right one is really a question of what you want from the day. For the postcard — white sand, shallow turquoise, the islets straight ahead — go to the village beaches: Ksamil Beach, Lori, Paradise, Bora Bora, Puerto Rico Beach. For a pool day with the sea in front of you, Mulino Beach at the north end is built on the rocks with no sand at all, a salt-water infinity pool, Balinese beds and a jetty to jump off. For front-row luxury, Principotes has a private beach, its statues and Prosecco. For a genuinely long day, Poda Lounge Bar in Poda Bay runs from 6am to 3am, premium loungers by day and open-air club by night. And for a mask and fins, Pulëbardha, between Saranda and Ksamil, beats all of them. Decide what the day needs to do, and the beach picks itself.

Getting there, and the hours worth showing up

From Saranda it is about 15 km and 20 to 25 minutes. The local bus goes every 20 to 60 minutes through the summer until around 8pm and costs 100 to 150 lek, cash only, while a taxi has no official meter and lands somewhere between €13 and €40 depending on season and negotiation — settle the price before you get in. The same road carries the Saranda–Butrint bus, which passes through Ksamil, so a beach morning and the ruins in the afternoon is an easy pairing. Timing matters more than most people plan for. July and August are the peak, and by late morning the sand is spoken for; arrive before ten, or come back after four, when the light is better anyway and sunbeds start freeing up. The mistakes everyone makes once

Turning up without cash is the big one. The currency is the lek, roughly 95 to the euro; euros are accepted in tourist spots but at a rate that quietly costs you, and buses, beach kiosks and small places want cash regardless. Second: assuming a taxi fare will sort itself out. Third: renting a scooter at €5–20 a day or a car at €20–35 and treating the drink-driving limit as flexible — tolerance here is effectively zero. Fourth: expecting your EU roaming to work. Albania is in neither the EU nor Schengen, so your data stops at the border unless you pick up a local SIM, around €25 at the airport, or an eSIM from about €3.50. And fifth: arriving out of season expecting all this. The beach season runs roughly May to October, and outside it most of the coast simply closes. None of these are expensive on their own; together they cost you the week.

The trick of this coast is that the beach day and the night out share the same address.
